Gulangyu, the car-free island off the coast of Xiamen, is a dream destination for travelers seeking history, culture, and stunning coastal views. But what if you’re traveling with a furry friend? Fortunately, the Xiamen-Gulangyu ferry has pet-friendly policies that make it easier for pet owners to explore this UNESCO World Heritage Site without leaving their companions behind. Here’s everything you need to know before boarding.
Gulangyu isn’t just famous for its colonial architecture and piano museums—it’s also a surprisingly welcoming place for pets. The island’s pedestrian-only streets mean no traffic hazards, and its open spaces provide plenty of room for dogs to stretch their legs. Many cafes and guesthouses are pet-friendly, making it an ideal spot for travelers who don’t want to compromise on experiences just because they’re bringing their pets along.
The Xiamen-Gulangyu ferry is the only way to reach the island (unless you’re swimming, which we don’t recommend). The ride takes about 20 minutes, offering scenic views of Xiamen’s skyline and the surrounding waters. But before you hop on, here’s what you need to know about bringing pets aboard.
The ferry permits small to medium-sized pets, including dogs and cats, as long as they are properly restrained. Larger breeds may face restrictions, so it’s best to check in advance. Exotic pets (like birds or reptiles) are generally not allowed unless they are in a secure carrier.
Pets must be in an enclosed carrier or on a leash at all times. If your pet is in a carrier, it should be well-ventilated and secure enough to prevent escape. Retractable leashes are discouraged since the ferry can get crowded.
Unlike some ferries that charge extra for pets, the Xiamen-Gulangyu ferry does not require a separate ticket for small animals. However, if your pet is large enough to occupy a seat, you may need to purchase an additional ticket. Always confirm with staff before boarding.
Pets should be well-behaved and non-disruptive. Aggressive animals may be denied boarding. If your dog tends to bark excessively or your cat gets anxious in crowds, consider a calming aid or training before the trip.
During holidays and weekends, the ferry gets extremely crowded. If your pet is easily stressed, try to travel during off-peak hours (early morning or late afternoon). Some ferries have designated pet-friendly zones—ask staff if this option is available.
Once you reach Gulangyu, explore pet-friendly spots like:
- Sunlight Rock (leashed pets allowed on certain paths)
- Pet-friendly cafes (ask locals for recommendations)
- Quiet beaches where dogs can play (avoid busy swimming areas)
Many travelers have successfully brought their pets to Gulangyu without issues. One visitor shared: "My Labrador loved the ferry ride! The staff was friendly, and we found a quiet spot near the railing where he could enjoy the breeze." However, some noted that weekends can be overwhelming for anxious pets, so timing is key.
While the Xiamen-Gulangyu ferry is accommodating, always double-check policies before your trip, as rules can change. With the right preparation, you and your pet can enjoy everything this beautiful island has to offer—stress-free!
